I got myself the book Dreamscapes by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. She makes the most wonderful magical paintings in watercolor and in this book she shows you how she does it. Well knowing how is one thing, doing it yourself quite another. But I love her fantastic otherworlds as she calls them. So practising I made this mermaid inspired by her lessons.

Ik heb het boek Dreamscapes aangeschaft van Stephanie Pui-Mun Law. Ze schildert prachtige magische tafrelen in aquarel en in dit boek leert ze je hoe je dat zelf kunt doen. Maar ja, weten hoe, is natuurlijk iets anders dan het kunnen. Maar ik houd van haar 'fantastic otherworlds' zoals ze ze noemt. Bezig met uitproberen heb ik deze meermin geschilderd geinspireerd door haar lessen.

This is what I did for the 2nd week of the Strathmore Online Doodles Workshop by Tracy Bautista.

I am a bit behind as you see, but luckely there is time enough, for the workshop will be open until August!

I think I did a bit too much on the paper, I mean I should have stopped earlier. It was fun though, although I think I prefer acrylic paint above water paint.

Dit is wat ik heb gemaakt voor de tweede week van de Strathmore Online Doodles Workshop van Tracy Bautista. Ik loop wat achter, maar we hebben gelukkig nog tijd genoeg, want de workshop blijft open tot augustus!

Ik ben iets te lang doorgegaan, vind ik, het had er beter uitgezien als ik eerder gestopt was. Ik geef, denk ik de voorkeur aan acrylverf boven waterverf voor dit soort werk.

Making a pouch with your art. Gebruik je kunst om een tasje te maken

What can you do with all those beautiful paintings, collages etc.? I did the following: made a transfer on iron transfer paper, cut the paper in little pieces and ironed it on several pieces of fabric. Then I am adding embroidery, a piece of tatting and when I am happy with the result I make a little bag out of it. I didn't mirror the image, because there was no text on it. If you want to do this with text, you'll have to scan the image first turn it over and then print it on your transfer paper, otherwise your text will be mirrored. The art I used was from last week's workhop with Tracy Bautista. For another idea to use your art have a look at Every life has a story.

Wat ga je doen met al die mooie collages, schilderingen etc.? Ik heb het volgende gedaan: mijn werk heb ik overgebracht op een vel transferpapier waarmee je de afbeelding op stof kunt strijken. Dat heb ik in stukjes geknipt en op lapjes stof gestreken. Daarna heb ik borduursteken t en een motiefje in frivolité toegevoegd tot ik tevreden was en daar maak ik dan een tasje van. Als er tekst op je afbeelding staat moet je het eerst scannen omdat anders de tekst in spiegelbeeld op je stof terechtkomt. De afbeelding heb ik gemaakt voor de eerste week van Tracy Bautista's workshop. Een ander idee om je kunst toe te passen vind je bij Every life has a story.

Been busy with the first week of Tracy Bautista's workshop! Made a couple of pieces, but just came round to make a photograph of one, because the format is too big for my scanner! It is so freeing to just work with colors and go with te flow. Have a look here, for Tracy Bautista's workshop. What did I do? I painted, sprayed (made my own spray with a spray bottle and acrylic paint), stamped (with foam stamps that I purchased), used oil pastels, black marker and a white marker.

Druk bezig geweest met de eerste opdracht van Tracy Bautista's workshop. Ik heb er een paar gemaakt, maar slechts één gefotografeerd, ze zijn te groot voor mijn scannertje! Het voelt zo bevrijdend lekker met felle kleuren te werken en je gang te gaan. Voor Bautista's workshop moet je hier zijn. Hoe heb ik het gedaan? Ik heb geverfd, gesprayed (heb mijn eigen spray paint gemaakt met een spray flesje en verdunde acrylverf), gestempeld (met gekochte foamstempels), oil pastels gebruikt, een zwarte stift en een witte.

An ATC (Artist Trading Card) is 2.5" x 3.5" or 64 x 89 mm, so rather small. The advantage is that you can make one even if you have only a small amount of time. On the internet is a lot of information about ATC's, if you want to make them yourself. Here is a link for you.

I just doodled a little round the face of the fairy, later I added some color with water soluble pencils.

Een ATC is een Artist Trading Card en de bedoeling is dat je zo'n origineel kunstwerkje ruilt met iemand. Op het internet vind je een hoop informatie hierover. Hier is alvast een link. De maat ligt vast: 2.5" x 3.5", de nederlandse maten worden dan wat ongemakkelijk, nl: 64 x 89 mm. Het voordeel van zo'n klein formaat is dat je het maakt in korte tijd. Ik heb eerst het gezicht getekend en daar vervolgens wat omheen gedoodled. Later wat kleur toegevoegd met aquarelpotloden.

It is the time of the year that making gifts comes naturally. This little pouch was embellished with an clip art image that I ironed on with a transfer. After that I stamped with acrylic paint, the stamps are just kid stuff, but I found them very effective. And well, after making the first pouch (see the post before) it was no problem just to make another one. For a great choice of images go here.

In deze tijd van het jaar is een cadeautje maken niet meer dan normaal. Op dit etuitje heb ik een clip art plaatje met een strijkijzer transfer aangebracht. Daarna gestempeld met acrylverf (gewone kindersstempeltjes gebruikt). En na het etuitje van de vorige post was het naaien geen enkel probleem. Een grote keus aan plaatjes vind je hier.

I never quite understood how to make a pouch with a zipper and more importantly with a lining as well. Luckily I found this tutorial on the internet. And it worked! I made a very small one (15 cm wide), but that is because I only had a very short zipper and I didn't feel like cycling into town. But now the first one is made I will get a whole bunch of zippers and sew away. These make lovely gifts.

Ik kon er nooit precies achterkomen hoe je nou een etuitje maakt met een rits en voering. Je begrijpt hoe blij ik was toen ik deze geweldige uitleg vond op het internet. En het werkte! Dit is een heel klein etuitje (15 cm breed), maar dat kwam omdat ik maar één klein ritsje in huis had en ik had geen zin om naar de stad te fietsen. Maar nu ik ben begonnen volgen er vast een heleboel meer. Ik ga een hele voorraad ritsjes aanschaffen. Dit zijn leuke cadeautjes.

This chibi wants your blood. I have drawn her on a tea stained paper with watercolors, pen and colored pencils. In photoshop I gave her a frame. Photoshop is still quite mysterious to me, so I am proud I managed that.

Deze chibi is uit op jouw bloed. Ik heb haar op een achtergrond die ik met thee heb gekleurd getekend met pen en gekleurd met waterverf en kleurpotloden. De omlijsting komt van Photoshop. Ik heb nog steeds moeite met dat programma, dus ben ik daar best trots op.

This bookmark taught me a lot. Working with a self closing mock ring, although I did that before. The SLT (shoe lace trick) which consists of a simple knot and makes it possible to work with two colors. And the OTT (Over the top join). I used thread #10 and therefore the bookmark is a bit larger than the one in the pattern of Jane Eborall which I found here.

Van het maken van deze boekenlegger heb ik een hoop geleerd: de zelfsluitende 'mock ring' die ik wel al vaker heb gebruikt. En de 'shoe lace trick' die uit een eenvoudige enkele knoop bestaat die je in staat stelt van kleur te wisselen. Daarnaast ook nog de 'over the top join' een handige verbinding. Met draad #10 werd mijn boekenlegger wat groter dan het patroon van Jane Eborall dat je hier kunt vinden.

This little book with a stab binding was made from lovely handmade paper from Cambodia. It has a feel like felt and there are flower petals in it. The pages are a download from here to organise your doodling in a nice way.

This is a real quick pattern for a tatted snowflake. Worked with two shuttles and thread # 10. You can do it with split rings, but you don't have to, I didn't. The pattern comes from the blog Sharon's Tatted Lace, you'll find the pattern here.

Used a carton box of liquorice as the cover for this little book. Had to eat it all first! We dutch really love this. Now I can buy my next box without feeling guilty: I will make a book out of it.

Heb dit leuke kartonnen dropdoosje als de omslag van mijn boekje gebruikt. Moest het natuurlijk eerst leeg eten! In Nederland weten we daar alles van. Ik ga gauw een volgend doosje kopen, want ik wil nog een boekje maken.

The pages of this book are made from standard-sized printer paper, cut in half and then folded. There are 8 signatures of four sheets each. I had some trouble with pasting the ribbon on the covers. The paste went through the ribbon in some places. Next time I will try pasting it down with very dry paste. Or is there an other solution? Well and also, I think the thread I used is too thin. It is the first one I made, so the next one will hopefully be better.

Voor de bladzijden van dit boek heb ik A4 printervellen gebruikt, eerst doormidden en dan gevouwen. Er zijn 8 katernen met elk vier bladen. Ik had problemen met het plakken van de lintjes, de lijm ging er op sommige plaatsen doorheen. Volgende keer zal ik heel droge lijm gebruiken. Of is er een andere oplossing? Bovendien heb ik te dun garen gebruikt, wel het is mijn eerste poging, dus de volgende zal beter worden, toch?

What to do with all the papers you make? Well, I still had a blank book block. So with one of the papers from my previous post (Disappearing Act) I made a cover. It is a nice little book for drawing or writing down some thoughts/poems etc. I added some white lines to the paper to make the forms pop a bit more.

Wat doe je met al die mooi versierde vellen papier. Ik had nog een blanco boekblokje liggen. Dus heb ik daar een omslag voor gemaakt met één van de vellen uit mijn vorige post (Disappearing Act). Het is een fijn boekje geworden om in te tekenen of zomaar gedachten/gedichten in te schrijven. Ik heb met een pen nog wat witte lijnen op het papier gezet om de vormen wat meer te laten uitkomen.

This paper doll has a Victorian wardrobe. At least that is what I plan to make for her. It is quite a task. For the design of her costume I found the idea in Gothic Lolitas, a nice book for kids (and adults) to draw manga girls in fancy dress.

Dit aankleedpoppetje van papier heeft een victoriaanse garderobe. Tenminste dat is de bedoeling: het is een hoop werk. Het ontwerp van haar pakje komt uit het boek Manga Gothic Lolita's. Een leuk boekje voor kinderen (en volwassenen) om te zien hoe je manga meisjes tekent in prachtige kleren.

Tatted Bracelet. Armband van frivolité

This bracelet is a combination of shuttle tatting and needle tatting. The pattern was inspired by this celtic bookmark. I used thread #10 and needle #5. The first part with the split rings I did with shuttles, because the thread would be so long with a needle that it would be almost impossible to work with. Has anybody a solution for that? The parts which are shoven in between the split rings were all done with a needle that goes very quick. The last rows up and under: one was done with shuttles the other with a needle. Can you see the difference?

Deze armband is gemaakt met zowel naaldfrivolité als met spoeltjes. Het patroon is voor een deel overgenomen van deze keltische boekenlegger. Ik heb draad # 10 gebruikt en naald #5. Het eerste gedeelte met de 'split rings' heb ik gedaan met spoeltjes, want de draad is gewoon te lang om met een naald te werken. Weet iemand hier een oplossing voor? De stukjes die tussen de 'split rings' worden geschoven heb ik allemaal met de naald gedaan, gaat lekker snel. Bij de laatste rijen heb ik de ééne met spoeltjes en de andere met een naald gemaakt. Zie jij het verschil?

Tatted celtic clover. Keltisch klavertje van frivolité

These celtic motifs are basically a long chain with picots. With the chain you form the celtic knot. It is easier to do that when you pin the curves down while you make the bends. The picots then are the connecting points for the next round. I found a pattern for this here. The black clover was shuttle tatted, while the green one was made with a needle. Both methods worked equally well.

Deze keltische klavertjes maak je met een lange boog met picots. Als de boog klaar is, vorm je die tot een keltische knoop. Het handigst gaat dat als je hem met spelden vastzet op bijv. een stuk piepschuim. The picots vormen vervolgens de punten waar de volgende ronde aan bevestigd wordt. Het patroon heb ik hier gevonden. Het zwarte klaverblad is met spoeltjes gedaan, het groene met een naald. Allebei de methodes gaan even goed.

Most of this drawing is water colors. At the end I added some pastels colored pencils, fineliner and acrylic white paint. The paper I used is a bit too rough for my liking, but well I started on this, so I had to finish it. I particularly like the flower in the background, backgrounds are always difficult. I should study skulls more, I think.

Deze tekening is voornamelijk met aquarelverf gemaakt. Aan het eind heb ik wat pastelkrijt, kleurpotlood, fineliner en witte acrylverf toegevoegd. Het papier is wat te oneffen naar mijn mening, maar ja ik was nu eenmaal begonnen. Ik ben tevreden over de bloem in de achtergrond, achtergronden zijn altijd een probleem voor mij. Op schedels moet ik me nog wat meer toeleggen.

The challenge for this month of the GPP Street team of Michelle Ward gave me a hard time. I really didn't know how to go about it. I don't make a lot of color mixes and thinking of names for them: I didn't have a clue. So I let time go by and once in a while thought about it. It was my visit at iHanna's blog that gave me this idea. I took some of my old watercolor drawings and looked for mixes that I could cut out. I pasted them in my journal and gave them names that reflect partly the drawing from which they came and partly what they make me think of now.

When I was finally working on this challange it gave me a lot of satisfaction.

Aan de opdracht voor deze maand van het GPP Street team van Michelle Ward had ik een harde dobber. Ik wist echt niet wat ik moest gaan doen. Ik meng niet vaak kleuren en namen voor nieuwe mengsels bedenken(?) ik had echt geen idee. Dus liet ik de opdracht maar liggen, maar dacht er wel af en toe aan.

Pas toen ik iHanna's blog bezocht en zag wat zij er mee gedaan had kreeg ik een idee. Ik heb een paar oude aquarellen gepakt en gezocht naar kleurmengingen, die ik kon uitknippen en in mijn artjournal plakken. De namen die ik ze heb gegeven komen voor een deel voort uit de oorspronkelijke aquarel en voor een deel geven ze weer wat de kleur nu bij me oproept. Eenmaal bezig met de opdracht, had ik er enorm plezier in.

Needle tatted square motif. Vierkant motief van naaldfrivolité

From the fandango bookmark it is quite easy to make a square motif. I decided to make it with the needle. That went very well, only fastening the end to the beginning, if you know what I mean, was a bit of a puzzle. But the result is very good. The pattern from Jane Eborall is to be found here and called Fandango square motif. I used a needle #5 and thread #10. It measures about 6 x 6 centimeters. (About 2 inches I guess)

Als je de Fandango boekenlegger hebt gemaakt is het niet moeilijk het daarvan afgeleide vierkant te maken. Ik heb het gedaan in naaldfrivolité. Dat ging heel goed, alleen bij het verbinden van het eind aan het begin is het uitkijken geblazen. Het resultaat is heel mooi. Het patroon Fandango square motif geheten van Jane Eborall vind je hier. Ik heb een naald #5 gebruikt en garen #10. Het formaat is 6 x 6 cm.

This copy-book for recipes belonged to a dutch magazine called Flow. I love the brown color of the paper, so I decided to draw on it. I am working from the book Féerie art by Amandine Labarre (a dutch translation). Added some stamps, stickers and doodles (zentangles) and colored pencils.

Dit receptenschriftje hoort bij het tijdschrift Flow. Ik vind de bruine kleur van het papier mooi om op te tekenen. Ik ben bezig met het book Elfen schilderen van Amandine Labarre. Er zijn wat stempels aan toegevoegd, wat stickertjes en doodles (zentangles) en kleurpotlood.

This doily taught me to make SCMRs (Self-closing Mock Rings). I use a paperclip at the beginning of the chain to have a point to connect the end of the chain to the beginning. I used thread #10. The link to this pattern is here.

Dit kleedje heeft als speciale techniek de 'onechte ringen' gemaakt van boogjes. Ik gebruik een paperclip aan het begin van het boogje om een gaatje te maken waar ik het andere eind van het boogje aan kan bevestigen. Ik heb draad # 10 gebruikt. Het patroon vind je hier.

Seasonal Wardrobe: what palette do you use on your journal page?

Crusade 52: Seasonal Wardrobe of Michelle Ward's Street Team asks us crusaders to think about the colors we use on our pages and if we change them with the change of the seasons.

Well, I really had to take a look in my journal to find out. And yes my colors seem to become brighter when spring is in the air. But most of the time I just choose my favorite colors, being: purple, violet, dark red, blue/green, and ofcourse black and white. I decided to put my four favorite palettes on one page just to see what the effect would be.

When I reflect on the colors I mostly use, I can see they are rather loud. Perhaps a good exercise for me would be to go for a more subtile palette next time: I do admire those who make pages in shades of browns with a light touch of pink or yellow. I call that the eco look.

Crusade 52: Seasonal Wardrobe van Michelle Wards Street Team vraagt dit keer eens na te denken over de kleuren die je gebruikt op je pagina's en of er verandering optreedt bij de wisseling van de seizoenen. Ik moest echt in mij art journal gaan kijken om te zien of dat het geval is. Mijn kleuren worden inderdaad helderder bij het begin van de lente. Maar meestal ga ik voor mijn lievelingskleuren: paars, violet, donkerrood, blauw/groen en natuurlijk zwart en wit. Ik heb mijn vier lievelingscombinaties op één pagina gezet om het effect te zien.

Als ik er zo naar kijk zie ik dat het effect behoorlijk fel is. Misschien moet ik eens een wat subtieler palet uitproberen: ik bewonder altijd die pagina's met verschillende tinten bruin en een klein beetje roze of geel. Ik noem dat de eco-look.

Clear tape transfers of Art Deco black and white photocopies, colored pencil, white

liner, sparkle and writing on top.Added some tape, because the color looked just right.

A layer of acrylic paint on top of the gesso, then some stamps.

Pasted some pages of a history book on the blank page, then added gesso and let it dry.

On this spread I used my handcarved stamps again and added colored pencil. Some glitter makes it really come alive. The text is an poem I've written some time ago (sorry it's dutch: it's about words that are so heavy I have trouble jotting them down on my page).

Op deze pagina's heb ik weer met zelfgemaakte stempels gewerkt en daar kleurpotlood aan toegevoegd. Een beetje glitter brengt er nog meer leven in. De tekst is een gedichtje dat ik een tijd geleden heb geschreven.

There are these fabulous old manuscripts with handwriting and beautiful embellished pages. I love to study them. So the pages I made this week are inspired by those. What did I do? Well. first a layer of gesso, then after drying some thinned blue acrylic paint on them. After that I blocked the middle part of the page with a rectangular piece of paper in order to stamp the sides. I just stamped away with red and some purple acrylic. On the right page I added some colored pencil between and on the stamped images and wrote some text in the middle with a fineliner. On the left page I glued some stamped tissue paper and put some clear tape transfers (I love that technique). And well that is it really. Just added some white pen on the right page and some golden acryl paint on both the pages.

Er zijn zulke prachtige oude handschriften met tekst en versieringen. Ik bestudeer ze graag. Bij de pagina's die ik deze week heb gemaakt heb ik me hierdoor laten inspireren. Wat heb ik gedaan? Wel, eerst een laag gesso om het papier te verstevigen, toen die droog was ging er een laag verdunde blauwe acrylverf overheen.Daarna heb ik het middelste gedeelte van de rechterpagina afgedekt met een velletje papier om daarna de randen lukraak te stempelen met rode en wat paarse acrylverf. Op de rechterpagina heb ik aan de randen kleurpotlood toegevoegd en een tekst in het midden geschreven met een zwarte fineliner. Op de linkerpagina heb ik stukken bestempeld tissue papier geplakt en een paar doorzichtige plakband transfers geplakt. En dat is het zo'n beetje, o ja nog wat goudkleurige acrylverf en witte viltstift op de rechterpagina.

New journal spread in my art journal with spray paint

Bought myself a can with black spraypaint. Oops that goes fast! I first gessoed the pages, because the paper of this dummy isn't the best quality and otherwise the paint seeps through to the next page and we don't want that to happen. The labels I made on my sewing machine and pasted them in later, for it is almost impossible to lay a book under the needle. The Victorian lady is clear tape transfer. From an envelope (I used the inside for the labels) I took the window and put a feather in.

Ik heb een bus met zwarte spraypaint gekocht. Moeilijk in bedwang te houden! Eerst de pagina's van gesso voorzien, anders loopt de verf door. Deze dummy is niet van de allerbeste kwaliteit. De labeltjes heb ik op de naaimache gemaakt en ze daarna ingeplakt. Een boek onder de naaimachine is vrijwel onmogelijk. De victoriaanse dame is een transfer met doorzichtig plakband. Van de binnenkant van de envelop waarmee ik ook de labels heb gemaakt heb ik het venster gebruikt om de veer achter te steken.
After the layer of gesso, I gave the page some relief by pressing plastic embroidery maze in the wet gesso. I think you can see it a bit. With neocolor II added some color after the gesso was dry.

Na de laag gesso er relief in aangebracht met plastic borduurstramien. Als je goed kijkt kun je dat misschien zien. Met Neocolor II kleur aangebracht, nadat de gesso droog was.
In a carton box I sprayed with some stencils, I didn't find it easy to stay in control as you well can see. But what the hack, I am going to add another layer.

In een kartonnen doos gesprayed over stencils, ik vind het lastig de verf te doseren, zoals je ook wel kunt zien. Maar wat geeft het, er komt toch nog een laag overheen.
Just pasted some bookpages and tissue paper on the spread and my sprayed images are a lot less dominant.

Een paar bladzijden uit een boek en wat tissue papier er op geplakt en de vormen van de stencils zijn een hoop afgezwakt.

Dit zijn de laatste pagina's in mijn art journal. In deze post vind je een aantal links over art journaling waar ik veel aan heb gehad en die me nog altijd inspireren.
The finished page (for now!)
I started with a layer of gesso, then I stencilled a thin layer of lime green acrylic, on this layer I stamped with turquoise acrylic, using bubble wrap and corrugated cardboard.
Pasted some black and white photocopies, a stamp and an image of the 'girl with pearl earring' on the page and 2 clear tape transfers with text. Layered it alle with tissue paper that I painted beforehand.
Some letter stamps and more stencilling with white acryl paint.

Working in my art journal is very liberating. Because it is a book, I don't feel I am making a piece of art. It is all about experimenting and playing with different types of materials. It is being a kid again and never caring about the outcome, but just enjoying the process. And once in a while a page turns out really well and you say wow, did I make that? You can always return to a page that you don't like and start over by giving it a new layer of gesso or acrylic paint. I love to browse the internet and look for art journal pages. Sometimes you come upon real gems. I think that is one of the positive sides of the worldwide web, you can see work of people you otherwise would never have seen. Whenever I am blocked and don't know what to work on I visit blogs of very creative people and they always give me the spark to try again.

There are so many creative people out there I cannot name them all. I just give you some links I visit over and over again, because they never stop to inspire and surprise me.

Tracy Bautista. I know her from the book Collage Unleashed and that book was such a revelation to me. If you can only buy one book, I would say buy this one. Here site is very inspiring, I recommand to go through her archives, you'll find lots of beautiful work.

iHanna. In this blog you find all sorts of different techniques and articles. Really worth browsing through and coming back to.

Balzer Designs. For those who want to start with an art journal a real must. Lots of techniques and examples.

GPP Street Team. Michelle Wards challenges are a great way to get started. And if you are not sure about what to write on your page this is the place to be. Have a look at older challenges as well, you'll really get inpired and the links to all the people who did them are also a good resource.

Daisy Yellow. Lots of tutorials and links. A real fun blog, always gives you a happy feeling.

Dblogala. Art journaling in combination with doodling. Have a look at the links and you'll find so many more creative places.

Hub Bub. Diana trouts blog. I bought her book Journal Spilling and that shows art journaling is for everybody, she invites us to make a mess! Her blog gives additional techniques and ideas.

Papieren avonturen. Lots of techniques and there is some bookbinding also. Dutch blog. but with a translation in english.

Met je art journal bezig zijn is zo heerlijk bevrijdend, omdat het een boek is, heb je nooit het gevoel ik zit een kunstwerk te maken, je kan zo een bladzij omslaan en iets nieuws beginnen. Het gaat om het experiment met steeds andere materialen. Zoals bij een kind gaat het om het proces en niet om het resultaat. Dat neemt niet weg, dat je af en toe jezelf verrast en je denkt,wow heb ik dat gemaakt? Een pagina die niet geslaagd is kun je altijd een nieuw leven geven door er gesso op te smeren of acrylverf. Het internet is een oneindige bron voor art journals en soms vind je echt juweeltjes en vraag je je af: hoe hebben ze dat gedaan? Dat vind ik echt een van de postieve kanten van internet: dat je kennis kunt nemen van wat anderen maken. Als je een keer geen inspiratie hebt is het een goed idee bij anderen te kijken en voor je het weet ben je weer bezig.

The human figure I find the most difficult to draw. So I sometimes copy from drawing manuels. This figure is from one of Christopher Harts books, called Manga mania occult and horror. Most of his books deal with drawing cartoons, but I don't like cartoons. This book however gives detailed information how to draw human beings (occult ones I should say). I am really going to try again.

For her hair I used colored pencil, I didn't want to but I couldn't get it right with paint.

Menselijke figuren tekenen vind ik vreselijk moeilijk. Dit figuur komt uit een boek van Christopher Hart, het heet Manga horror & occult. Zijn boeken gaan meestal over cartoontekenen, maar dat is niet mijn stijl. Dit boek geeft echter een goede methode om mensen te tekenen (een beetje griezelige weliswaar). Ik ga het echt weer proberen. Voor haar haar gebruikte ik kleurpotlood, dat doe ik liever niet, maar met alleen verf lukte het niet.

Needle tatted necklace with rosette Halsketting met rosette van naaldfrivolité

This rosette and the rest of this ornament was made entirely with needle tatting. I used thread #20 and needle #5. I first made the centre flower and after that added the little rose and the side embellishments. I didn't make a design, just tatted away. I love this blue color and I think the silver ornaments add to the sparkle. And the lovely model ofcourse I had in front of my camera.

De rosette en de rest van dit ornament maakte ik in zijn geheel met naaldfrivolité. Ik heb draad #20 gebruikt en naald #5. Eerst maakte ik de roos in het midden, daarna voegde ik de kleine roos toe en de zijornamenten. Ik heb vantevoren geen ontwerp gemaakt, maar heb het al doende bedacht. Ik vind deze kleur blauw erg mooi en de zilveren hangertjes geven het iets extra's. En het prachtige model dat ik voor mijn camera had natuurlijk.

This little rose motif is such fun to tat. I did it before and always with shuttles, I wonder how it will turn out with a needle. With shuttles it becomes very neat and flat and I like that. I think there are a lot of variations possible, especially when you make the picots on the first ring larger. You start with a ring with picots, after closing the ring you have to make a false or mock picot. That sounds complicated but I found a handy tutorial on Sharon's blog. Have a look! The pattern comes from Jon's Tatting patterns. I used the rose before in a necklace in combinations with needle pieces. See the photograph.

Dit roosmotief is erg leuk om te maken in frivolité. Ik heb het al eerder gemaakt en altijd heb ik spoeltjes gebruikt. Ik vraag me af hoe het wordt als je een naald gebruikt. Met spoeltjes wordt het heel netjes en plat. Er kunnen veel variaties met dit motief worden gemaakt, als je bijv. de picots van de eerste ring groter maakt. Je begint met een ring met picots, nadat de ring is gesloten maak je valse of 'mock' picot. Dat klinkt ingewikkelder dan het is, ik vond een goede uitleg op Sharons blog. Ga daar even kijken. Het patroon komt van Jon's Tatting patterns. Ik heb dit roosje eerder gebruikt in een halsketting gecombineerd met naaldfrivolité. Zie de foto.

I love patterns with squares in it, especially when all you make are little circles. So this pattern from Jon's tatting patterns was very attractive to me. You have to make four squares and put them together. I used thread #20 and shuttles, then the doily measures 18 by 18 cm. The pattern link you find here.

Ik ben dol op patronen met vierkanten, vooral als je ze maakt met cirkeltjes. Dus sprak dit patroon van Jon's tatting patterns me aan. Je moet 4 vierkanten maken en die aan elkaar zetten. Ik heb draad # 20 gebruikt en met spoeltjes gewerkt, dan wordt het kleedje 18 x 18 cm. De link naar het patroon vind je hier.

From the pattern you will find here I needle tatted these pair of barefoot sandals, you can also use shuttles of course. The description of how to make these is good to follow and the pictures are very clear. I enjoyed making them and it was a fast job.

Het patroon van deze voetversiering vind je hier, de techniek die ik gebruikte was naaldfrivolité, maar je kunt natuurlijk ook spoeltjes gebruiken. De beschrijving is duidelijk en vooral de foto's zijn goed te volgen. Het maken ging snel en was leuk om te doen.

Needle tatted necklace

The pattern for this necklace was inspired by this pattern, as you will see I only used one quarter of the pattern. I just tatted it with a needle and added beads. The beads must be on your thread before you start tatting. The chain was made with Josephine's knots, for an explanation and video how to do these go here.

De inspiratie voor deze halsketting heb ik gekregen van dit patroon, slechts een kwart heb ik gebruikt. Dit is naaldfrivolité en ik heb kraaltjes toegevoegd. De kralen moeten aan je draad zijn geregen voor je begint. De ketting is gemaakt met de Josephine knoop, een uitleg en filmpje vind je hier.

Needle tatted mask, Masker van naaldfrivolité

This mask was an enormous job, I can tell you. The pattern is from Needle Tatting and other nonsense. The first medallion I did with shuttles, because I just didn't figure out how to do it with a needle, but the side medallions and the rest of the pattern I used a needle. What I found very difficult at the end was to work over the metal thread and hide it completely, perhaps I should paint it black first next time. I am proud with the end result though and I learnt a lot from this exercise.

Dit masker was een enorme klus. Het patroon is van Needle Tatting and other nonsense. Het eerste medaillon heb ik met spoeltjes gemaakt, omdat het me niet lukte met een frivoliténaald, maar de medaillons aan de zijkant en de rest van het patroon is helemaal met een naald gedaan. Wat me erg tegenviel was om het ijzerdraad heen werken en te zorgen dat het onzichtbaar werd, misschien verf ik het de volgende keer eerst zwart. Ik ben wel trots dat het eindelijk af is en ik heb een hoop geleerd van dit patroon.

This fairy is present at the birth of a baby snail, while the mother is anxiously looking on. The figure of the fairy came from a book by Linda Ravenscroft. Painted with watercolors on hot pressed paper.

Dit elfje is bij de geboorte van een babyslakje, terwijl de moeder met spanning toekijkt. Het elfenfiguurtje komt uit een boek van Linda Ravenscroft. Geschilderd met waterverf en ik heb hotpressed papier gebruikt 300 gr. van Schut.

Tatted doily / kleedje in frivolité

This little doily was made with shuttles and thread #10. The pattern is from Tat-a-Renda, look for merriment doily. It took quite some time, but I like this pattern for it is in one round you tat the whole piece.

Dit kleedje is met spoeltjes en draad #10 gemaakt. Het patroon is van Tat-a-Renda, je vindt het onder de naam 'merriment doily'. Het was een behoorlijke klus, maar het leuke van dit patroon is dat je het in één keer maakt.

Been there, done that: Crusade 48. Making evidence pages in your journal

We're making evidence pages in our journals for the crusades organised by Michelle Ward. For my spread I saved some cards and bills from a short stay in Nijmegen this month (the oldest city in the Netherlands), we visited some friends and had a wonderful time. I lived there once, so it is also a trip along memory lane but a lot changed since those days.

We maken pagina's over dingen die we hebben gedaan of meegemaakt voor de Crusades van Michelle Ward. Ik heb wat kaartjes en rekeningen verzameld van een tripje naar Nijmegen deze maand, waar we vrienden bezochten en veel plezier hadden. Ik heb daar ooit nog gewoond, maar er is veel veranderd in de stad.

Above is the final result of my spread, perhaps I will add some doodling or stitches later on.

Hierboven zie het uiteindelijke resultaat, misschien voeg ik later nog wat doodles of steken toe.
First I stamped my pages with bubble wrap and acrylic paint.

Eerst gestempeld met noppenplastic en acrylverf.
Next I pasted the map, some cards and a little brown envelope for some more cards on the page.

Vervolgens de verschillende dingen opgeplakt, zoals de kaart en foldertjes.
After that I added some stamping and some paint to blend in the map.

Daarna nog wat gestempeld en wat verf toegevoegd.

Fairy in water color

I am an admirer of Linda Ravenscroft's fairy art. And love to read her books on how to draw fairies. From her book How to draw & paint Fairyland I copied a figure and placed her in my own background. The bird is my own as you will clearly see. It is fun to work with paint and to make your own fantasy land.

Ik bewonder de elfentekeningen van Linda Ravenscroft en lees graag haar boeken over de techniek van elfen tekenen. Uit haar boek Het Elfenrijk komt de figuur die ik in mijn eigen achtergrond plaatste. De vogel heb ik zelf gemaakt en dat is ook wel te zien, denk ik. Het is leuk met waterverf in de weer te zijn en je eigen fantasieland te scheppen.

Needle tatting pendants

Took up the needle again for some tatting. Yes, it goes a whole lot quicker than with shuttles, but it is different. And the Victorian sets for the pendants with the heart and key are difficult, I never succeed in doing all the sets and then pull the thread through, so I work it in parts. The pattern for this pendant I found on Needle tatting and other nonsense.

Heb weer wat aan naaldfrivolité gedaan. Het gaat wel een stuk sneller dan met spoeltjes, maar het ziet er anders uit. En de 'Victorian sets' bij de hangertjes met het hart en de sleutel vind ik altijd heel lastig. Het lukt me nooit om alles op de naald te zetten en dan de draad door te halen, dus doe ik het maar in gedeeltes. Het patroon voor deze hangers heb ik van Needle tatting and other nonsense.

Amaryllis water color sketch

The Amaryllis planted before Christmas is now in full bloom. The color is a very soft pink. I first made a light pencil sketch, then colored the sketch with water colors. Finally I accented the forms with a black fineliner.

De Amaryllis die ik voor de Kerst heb geplant staat nu in volle bloei. De kleur is zachtrose. Ik ging als volgt te werk. Eerst een lichte potloodschets, vervolgens ingekleurd met waterverf en tenslotte heb ik de vormen geaccentueerd met een zwarte fineliner.

Wrapping it all up from Christmas!

Don't we all save all those beautiful papers we get to use them sometime in the future? Well I do, just until I have so many that I don't know where to turn and with sadness in my heart I have to throw some out. The new challenge of Michelle Ward, called 'It's a wrap' has a good idea to at least deal with some of them. You have to make some journal pages out of them. I went through all the cards and papers from last Christmas and just chose the ones that have a special meaning for me. From the Christmas cards I made black and white photocopies, for I found them to stiff to paste into my journal. The last thing I added was my tatted Christmas star.

It felt very good to have made a memory spread of Christmas 2010 and get it all out of the way.

Bewaren we niet allemaal al die mooie kerstpapiertjes en kerstkaarten om ze in de toekomst te gaan gebruiken? Nou ik wel, tot ik omkom in de papiertjes etc. en ik ze tot mijn grote spijt wel moet wegdoen. De nieuwe challenge van Michelle Ward 'It's a wrap' heeft een goed idee om dit probleem althans voor een deel op te lossen. Je maakt er pagina's mee in je dagboek. Ik heb de papiertjes en kaarten genomen die een speciale betekenis voor me hebben. Van de kaarten heb ik zwartwit kopieen gemaakt, anders werd het te dik. Tot slot heb ik de frivolité ster erbij geplakt.

Het gaf een goed gevoel een herinnering aan Kerst 2010 te hebben gemaakt en de rest kan nu de deur uit.

Here I added some doodling and text and some color on the black and white photocopies. And a text transfer with transparant tape. The stitching is not real, I did it with a fineliner.

Ik voegde een paar doodles toe, wat tekst en kleur op de zwart/wit kopieen. En een tekstje met een transfer met doorzichtig plakband. Het stiksel is niet echt, maar getekend met een fineliner.

Tatted Chinese coin bookmark

Made another tatted bookmark with a very nice pattern from Jon's thread escapade. I think this pattern will also do very well as bracelet in black thread for example. I learnt to make split rings with this one.

Weer een boekenlegger gemaakt van frivolité met een fraai patroon van Jon's thread escapade.

Ik denk dat dit patroon ook goed dienst kan doen voor een armband in zwart garen bijvoorbeeld. Met dit patroon heb ik geleerd 'split rings' te maken.

Being creative in 2011

If you want a little help with being creative it is a good idea to participate in some challenges. My New Years resolution is to try to do something everyday. I found 3 challenges which I believe are going to be very helpful: -GPP Street Team, Artjournaling daily and the Sketchbook Challenge. The links to these sites are on the rightside of my blog. The nice thing about these challenges is that it is not compulsary. For the Sketchbook Challenge of january with the theme: Highly Priced I made the drawing of the cinnamon sticks.

Als je een beetje hulp nodig hebt om tot iets creatiefs te komen, is het een goed idee deel te nemen aan zog. challenges. Mijn voornemen voor 2011 is iedere dag iets te maken. Ik heb 3 challenges gevonden die mij heel handig lijken daarvoor: GPP Street Team, Artjournaling daily en de Sketchbook Challenge. De links naar deze sites vind je aan de rechterkant van mijn blog. Tatted star for Christmas

This little tatted motive looks very simple, but I learned a new trick: the mock ring, that is a ring made out of a chain. The nice thing about that is that you can make a ring on top! If you want to check out how this is done and for the pattern go to Jon's Thread Escapade.

Dit motiefje van frivolité ziet er heel simpel uit, maar ik heb een nieuw techniekje gebruikt: de 'valse' ring, dat is een ring die gemaakt wordt met een boogje. Het voordeel daarvan is dat je er weer een ringetje bovenop kunt maken. Als je wil weten hoe dit moet ga dan naar Jon's Thread Escapade.

Putting your art on display: Challenge 46 of the GPP Street Team

The latest challenge of Michelle Wards Street Team is What's your hang up? I just love the titles she gives to her challenges! In other words be brave enough to put one of your creations in a frame for all to see. Luckily she gave us another month to get around to it, so I finally took the big step and here you see one of my water color paintings behind glass. These are buttons you see, in case you wondered.

I don't think there will be many more in a frame soon, for I really just love to be working on them rather then putting them up as a display. But I must admit it gives your work definitely an extra.

De laatste opdracht van Michelle Wards Street Team is What's your hang up? Ik vind de namen van haar opdrachten altijd geweldig! Met andere woorden wees zo dapper om één van je creaties in te lijsten. Gelukkig kregen we een maand extra de tijd, dus heb ik ook de stap genomen en hier zie je een van mijn aquarellen achter glas. Het zijn knopen, voor het geval je je afvraagt wat het voorstelt.

Ik denk niet dat ik nog meer ga inlijsten, want ik doe het toch vooral om lekker bezig te zijn. Maar ik geef toe het ziet er wel een stuk beter uit.

Japanese paint brush in watercolor

Aren't they beautiful those Japanese paint brushes, almost too beautiful to use. So I decided to make a water color drawing of it. With a bit of colored pencil.

Zijn ze niet prachtig die japanse penselen, bijna te mooi om te gebruiken. Daarom heb ik er maar een aquarel van gemaakt. Met een beetje kleurpotlood.

Found souvenir

Cannot remember who gave this to us, but the children played with him for years. Therefore he is a bit rough around the edges. He came from Egypt that's for sure. I used ballpen for this drawing, that is less outspoken than black fineliner. I like that.

In my moleskine I made four drawings of the same top. #1 with colored pencils, #2 with watercolors, #3 graphite pencil, #4 fineliner. It is interesting to do such an exercise for you discover what materials are good for you and which ones you like the best. For me it is undoubtedly watercolors, not that I am very good with them, but I really like working with the colors and the quick result is very rewarding.

Had to make another page for the Back to back crusade # 45 of Michelle Ward. I made a color copy of the text pages I made for crusade # 43. Did some stencilling on it with acrylic paint and doodled on those forms with a white permanent marker. It is great to see how layered the page becomes. I pasted the page in my journal.

Back to back: crusade 45

Michelle Wards Crusade 45 Back to back is about using the background you made earlier. To try some things out it is handy to make a couple of color copies and work on them. I took the background I made for Crusade 44. I decided to make a transfer with a black and white photocopy. Transfers are very difficult for me, I used nail polish remover on the back of the photocopy, but the colors of my background colorcopy came off! The end result was not too bad though, it is the face on the left page. I made the other transfers in the only way I know how: with transparent tape.

Michelle Wards Crusade 45 Back to back gaat over het gebruiken van een eerder gemaakte achtergrond. Om het een en ander uit te proberen is het handig een paar kleurkopieen te maken en daar op te werken. Ik heb de achtergrond gebruikt van crusade 44. Ik wilde een transfer maken met een zwartwit kopie, maar ik heb altijd problemen met transfers. Ik gebruikte nagellakremover en de kleuren van mijn achtergrond lieten los! Het eindresultaat valt mee: het is het gezicht op de linkerpagina. Voor de andere transfers heb ik doorzichtige tape en zwart/wit kopieen gebruikt. Dat gaat gelukkig altijd goed. Ik denk erover om nog wat te schrijven op de pagina's.

Every year I make a couple of diaries for some female friends and family members and today I finished them for the new year. I got lovely Italian paper with handbags. Each one has another bag on the front.

Elk jaar maak ik een aantal agendaatjes voor een paar vrouwelijke familieleden en vriendinnen en voor 2011 heb ik ze af. Ik heb heel mooi italiaans papier gebruikt met handtasjes er op. Ieder agendaatje heeft een ander tasje op de voorkant.

In a Scrape

Had trouble making some time for the latest challenge of Michelle Ward's Street Team, called In a scrape. But I am glad I managed and it was fun to do. You have to make a page in your journal with acrylique paint just using a credit card.
I really must try it again, for the layers do look very different from using a brush, sponge or whatever.

I did the following:
1. A thin layer of bright red that I sprayed with some water (the effect was lost in the next layer).
2. After drying I put a pink layer on top.
3. Then I put a lot of black on top (that really spoilt the first two layers!!)
4. I think I rescued my pages by using a mask with a very light pink color.

Het kostte me moeite even tijd te maken voor de nieuwe uitdaging van Michelle Ward's Street Team: In a Scrape. Je moet een pagina maken met acrylverf en daarbij een creditcard gebruiken. Ik ga het na deze eerste poging nog eens proberen, want het effect is heel anders dan met een kwast of spons.

Ik ging als volgt te werk:
1.Een dunne laag helder rood met wat water erover gesprayed (dat effect ging verloren bij de volgende laag.
2.Na drogen ging er een roze laag overheen.
3.Daarna gebruikte ik veel te veel zwart naar mijn idee en verpestte het.
4.Ik redde de boel enigzins door zachtroze te gebruiken en een sjabloon.

Made a collage on drawing paper. Did the following: Pasted black and white photocopies of my drawings and doodles on the paper, put a layer of tissue paper and paper napkins on top. Coloured with color pencils and Neocolor II. Stamped and stencilled with acrylique paint. Made accents with white marker, wrote with black fineliner and added some machine stitching.

Collage op tekenpapier. Als volgt gemaakt: zwart/wit fotokopieen van tekening en doodles opgeplakt, daar overheen een laagje vloepapier en papieren servet. Kleur aangebracht met kleurpotloden en Neocolor II. Gestempeld en gesjabloneerd met acrylverf. Accenten aangebracht met witte stift en tekst met zwarte fineliner. Challenge # 41 of Michelle Ward's Street Team was filling your page with a grid. I made mine in green and I just made another one in red. It is a fun way to make a journal page. Text messaging: a new crusade

This month Michelle Wards crusade is about texts, words and letters. You have to cut or tear them out of magazines and paste them on your page. Just that, the page doesn't have to be finished. It is very relaxing just to look for words, for you can forget about all those images that jump of the page. I decided to do a spread in black and white and one with colors. The pages are definetely not finished! I hope we will work on them in the next crusade. You can join till september the 1st. See link below.

Deze maand gaat Michelle Wards crusade over tekst, woorden en letters. Je moet ze uit tijdschriften knippen of scheuren en ze op je pagina's plakken. With thread #10 and needle #5 I first made the flower on the left and the little ornament on the right. Then with shuttles I started the flower in the middle and connected in the last round the three pieces together. I put silver rings on two of the picots and with a tatting needle made the chains that ended in a ring on the left and a split ring with a bead on the right.

Met draad nr.10 en naald nr. 5 maakte ik eerst de bloem links en het kleine figuurtje rechts. Met spoeltjes werd de bloem in het midden geknoopt, bij de laatste ronde bevestigde ik de drie aan elkaar. Ik maakte zilveren ringetjes aan de uiterste picots en met een frivoliténaald knoopte ik de ketting die eindigde aan de linkerkant in een ring en een 'split' ring met een kraal rechts.

Since I found the weblog of Totusmel I wanted to try out needle tatting, she makes the most amazing pieces of her own design and what is really great she shares her techniques on videos and these are easy to follow. I ordered my needles on the internet. I used a #5 with thread #10.

So I made some samples you see above. I did tatting before with shuttles and I think I prefer working with shuttles, I am not shure why. The shuttle tatting is finer in appearance and you can do more, because a needle won't bend. Well, that's how I think about it, so far.

The new challenge from Michelle Ward's Street Team is tearing your paper in strips and putting them on your page. It was just what I needed for I was stuck on a journal page in my paper bag book. The subject is cycling, for that is what I do. I don't drive a car. The text from Melanie's song is very appropriate so I added some lines.

This was how my page looked when I didn't know what to do or add.

I selected some scrapbook papers I had. Later I decided not to use the one with the loud colors (green, red. purple etc.)

This is my first lay out, on the tag I pasted a metal little mark that must have fallen of someone's bike. I found it in the street: it is called Gazelle a famous bicycle brand in the Netherlands.

In the sale I found these stencils, with red paint I put them over my page. (I still don't have spray paint) I also stamped with bubble wrap.

Well this is it before I added words. I put some gesso thinned with water on top to soften the red paint.

Finally getting the hang of it. It is a bit like claying with felt, but it takes a lot more time. I first thought you could do it with children, but the needles are in my opinion too sharp and too long. The risk they will hurt themselves or others is too great. A pity really for I think the little fluffy animals will have a great appeal to them.

Grid lock, working on your page with a grid

The new challenge of Michelle Ward's Street Team is using a grid on your page. I decided to look for scraps with the color green. I also cut out some parts of my prints from the challenge Pulling Prints. If you like to check out the grid lock challenge go to Michelle Ward's Street Team.

Above you see the final result, where I added some text.

First I made the grid on the empty pages. The book I made the grid in is my paper bag book, I think I will use it to experiment with grids and use a different color for every spread. A grid is very nice to work with, because you can first lay everything out and see if you like it.

The grid is drawn on the page. Under you see the paper pieces before I pasted them on my page. I added some handcarved stamps

Kumihimo, Japanese braiding technique

Kumihimo is a 1000 year old technique from Japan to make cords. It is easy and the result is very beautiful especially when you use satin cord. I made the cords for these two little bags this way. In the Netherlands there is a Kumihimo package for sale at Pipoos incl. a little booklet, some cords and paper discs with instructions to follow. I think children will like it also.

Making a little bag out of an old jacket

I made this bag out of an old jacket. And I have enough material left to make another one. I decided to make use of one of the pockets. On it I sewed a fabric transfer of one of my collages. The little pieces of tatting I made to practice that technique, I sewed on top. The little ornament is a piece of butterfly wing behind glass. This is my jacket, brown and a little old, I wondered what to do with it. The fabric is rather sturdy, so very useful for a little bag.

I took two pieces out of the fabric (jacket ruined for ever). One piece with a pocket.

I transferred a collage on white coton and layed out some pieces on the front of my bag to see how it best fitted.

With my sewing machine I fastened the transfers and some ribbons on my bag.

The tatting I sewed on by hand. Finally I will make a cord for the bag and I have a good place to put my keys while at work.

It is the first time I am making photo's while working on something. I got the idea from Daisy Yellow Blog. It is a nice way to document the process, although I had really to remind myself a few times to get my camera.

I have this 19th century water jug and wash basin with beautiful drawings or should I say doodles? I had a good look and decided to copy some of them in my moleskine sketchbook. They are so delicate and beautiful. I first made a pencil sketch and traced these with a micron fineliner. Then added some coloured pencil. Doodling is of all times.

The new challenge of the GPP Street Team is going from large to small or vice versa. An easy challenge according to Michelle Ward, but this month things were complicated, first my computer stopped working all together (that's repaired now!), then my husband had a small accident and we had a lot of birthdays in the family. But I like to try to reach the 40 posts with all our other enthousiastic team members. I am cheating though: the books I show here were made before and not this month. The big one is a sorcerer's book with a magic wand (I made several of these and I will show them in a later post), the smaller ones are all try-outs and models I made some time ago. I prefer to work small, partly because my workspace is very small and secondly because I don't have the tools to bind big books. The sorcerer's book is a open binding and you don't need a lot of space for that.

So and now I am going to see what the others have done so far!!

Labels made with Shrinky dinks

I made some labels with Shrinky Dinks (also called Krimpie Dinkie or polyshrink, shrink a dink etc). First make your drawing with a permanent marker. The seize I used was 10 x 18 cm (!), that will give labels of 4 x 7 cm(!). After doodling, I gave them some color with colored pencils. Then you have to bake them for about 3 minutes, but look on the package for the exact time. O, and don't forget to punch holes in them before that!!

This was the original drawing on the shrink folie.

These labels are fun to use with a handmade book or a present.

Pulling Prints with Michelle Ward

Pulling prints with a stash of index cards (100 in a pack!) Not all of them works of art.

Surprising results with acetate forms, I think I will add some writing, they will make great postcards.

The challenge 39 'Pulling Prints' of the Street Team this time is about making prints with forms of tyvek on index cards with acrylic paint. This technique is called monoprint and each print is a unique one. The two below ones are indeed made with tyvek forms, but the tyvek came from an envelope and I found it too thin, so I made new forms with acetate. The two top ones are made with acetate, I think it went a lot better. I really made a lot of prints and most ones didn't come out rather well, but it is a real learning experience. You have to find out how wet the paint must be and how hard you must press. I did two sessions. I have a great stash of cards now I can use for collage or doodling.

Grab a tissue Michelle Ward's Street Team

Another exciting challenge from the Street Team: grab a tissue. In dutch it is called vloepapier. I bought some white and I found in my stack of papers some pink and purple. Those last colours were very loud, a bit too loud for my taste, but I decided to use them anyway, because it is an experiment, right? I first gessoed the pages and the white tissue, after that I painted them with gesso. I stamped letters on my tissuepaper and stamped on my pages. Then began the layering. To give the pages some life, I added the picture and the stamp of a feather. The coloured tissuepaper was added without gessoing or painting it beforehand.

It is very good to participate in these challenges, because it gets you out of your comfortzone and it is inspiring to see what others did with the same challenge. If you like to participate go to: Michelle Ward. Even if you don't participate you'll find lots of fantastic technics and tips.

Paper Bag Book

I made a book out of paper bags, it took a while to collect enough bags and they are of various quality. The book has a rough appearance I really like. My idea is to fill it with symbols, my own symbols. First I think I'll have to put some gesso on the pages to strenghten them.

Paper Fabric

Paper fabric is a combination of a fabric background on which pieces of paper are pasted with PVA glue. The fun is that before you start covering your fabric you can put threads or other flat items on the fabric and when you use thin paper layers you will see them through. I found a tutorial on internet some time ago, but now there is a great tutorial here:http://www.ihanna.nu/blog/. I made my paper fabric on a rather sturdy coton fabric, a leftover piece from a curtain. When the paper fabric was dry, I stencilled on it and added some stitching with my sewingmachine and some doodling with a marker. The feel is a bit leatherlike, I really love it and it stays very flexable. I got inspired to make a bookcover out of it, a bracelet and a corsage.

Michelle Ward's Street Team Challenge 37 Xxx's and Ooo's

This is another Street Team Challenge I liked to play along with. Because of Valentine the theme is Love Letters and Michelle was so kind to explain to me that XO just means kisses and hugs. I realized I finally understand Trisha Yearwood's song Xxx's and ooo's!! So I put a line of that song in my pages. And I sign all my letters with xxx's and ooo's from now on (altough I'm not an American girl).

There are a lot of techniques I used in these pages. To name a few: stencilcutting, gesso resist stamping, portion control, brush effects with monoprint, dirty brushing and ofcourse stamping. To find a description of all these exiting techniques go to Michelle Ward's Street Team.

I am not totally content with my colors and my compostion, I have to think about that before I start next time. But it is a good learning experience to use these different ways of making layers on your page.

Making travel journals

This is my first travel journal about a visit to Barcelona. I collected tickets and receipts and pamphlets and put them in a little booklet I had bought.

This little book used to be a cookbook, I just pasted my pictures and put my drawings on top of the text. It is about a holiday in the lake district in the north of England. I collected the pieces during our travels.

This little book is about our visit to Valencia in Spain, where my son was studying during that time. A beautiful place, really worth a visit.

This latest journal is about Lisboa (Portugal). I made the book from bank envelopes and a paper bag I got during the visit. I stencilled and used gesso, on that I doodled. I didn't paste the memorabilia but used my sewing machine, that is a very nice way to decorate your pages.

I have been working on a fabric cover for a book to be filled with a stash of papers that have been lying around. First I made a fabric transfer, then I did some doodling with markers. I wrote some words on little fabric scraps and stitched them onto the cover. With acrylic paint I stencilled and stamped with bubblewrap plastic. At last I attached a couple of transparacies.

The book is really messy in the spine, not my style really, but it is very tactile and nice to touch. I had a hard time to put the signatures in.

Collage with mixed mediums

Since I have the book 'Collage unleashed' by Tracy Bautista I really enjoy making collages. Her book is so inspiring! An abundance of information, also about working on fabric. The transparacy I used is not printed, I just wrote on acetate with a marker and used that.

The little portrait is Sarah Bernhardt, the famous Belle Epoque actress. I adore that period in history.

Michelle Wards Street Team Crusade 36 Braving the elements

'Braving the elements' you could say that again, in the Netherlands we have one weather alarm after the other! What a little snow can do. A very good challenge, I found it surprisingly hard to cut snowflakes. It didn't become real snowflakes at all, but I didn't want to cut them for hours, because we had to do the challenge within an hour. I didn't quite succeed in that, it took me a some more time. I just bought a jar of gesso for half price, so it was nice to have a reason to use that rightaway. I really liked the effect spraying with water had on the surface and stencilling with gesso is a nice way to make layers. I didn't do the older crusades, so it is good some of that stuff is repeated now. I am not totally satisfied with the outcome of my pages, but I learned a lot and I have enough gesso to repeat the exercise. Thanks for the inspiring challenge!

Tatting (Frivolité in Dutch)

Found an old book in the library about tatting, seemed a suitable occupation during Christmas. Took me a while to master the technique, but now I can go on and on, with every new round the piece will grow. It is very relaxing. I remember my grandmother knew how to do it.
It wasn't easy to find a shop who still had the spindles. A very old shop in our citycentre had some in a faraway drawer. On the internet you can ofcourse find them.
On the internet are tattinggroups active, but I don't think I have time for that.

We're heading for a White Christmas!!

This year it looks we're having a White Christmas. It is so beautiful in the garden and the streets look so quiet. That is deceptive for everyday the traffic is awful and I am thinking I'll have to take the bus to work for cycling doesn't seem a good idea right now. But I love the crisp air and the muffled sounds. Merry Christmas to all.

Michelle Ward's Street Team Challenge 35

Well, this is the story: as a child I always fantasized how wonderful it must be to write books like monks did in monasteries. With a feather with a sharp point and a little inkpot, standing at a desk.

I began working in a big bookshop and realized that the printingpresses made writing by hand a hobby. Books have been always very important for me and the rest of my family. I met my husband in the bookshop. Later I became a librarian and I am still working in a library, my husband is publisher and my daughter just published her first book. My children, grown up now, are also booklovers. During the holidays I have been often in Ireland and I am very enthousiastic about the Book of Kells in Dublin's Trinity College. Written by hand, with so many fantastic illustrations. This book represents for me all my childhood dreams and good memories of holidays in beautiful Ireland and last but not least the area were I work in.

Making this challenge made me realize that I finally do what I dreamt of as a child: I make books by hand and fill them with my own signs. So this is my ode to the Book of Kells, a book full of signs.

I did day 6 of Sarah Whitmire Soul Journaling. It was nice to look for all the images in magazines. You find that some images attract you and some don't. In the background I used gesso and acrylpaint. When the paint is still wet I put plastic foil on it to get the nice background.
